TRE® – Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises

A gentle, body-led practice to support nervous system regulation.

TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a gentle, body-based practice developed by Dr David Berceli. It uses the body’s natural tremor response to help release muscular tension and support nervous system regulation.

What is TRE®?

TRE® uses a short sequence of simple exercises to activate the body’s natural tremor response, known as neurogenic tremors. These involuntary tremors can help muscles soften and release tension, while supporting the nervous system to settle and regulate.

TRE® is a body-led practice, so there is no need to analyse or talk through past experiences. As the tremors emerge, you are encouraged to notice your body’s responses and allow the process to unfold at a comfortable pace. Many people experience a sense of relaxation, grounding and greater ease afterwards.

TRE® is a self-regulating practice. You’ll learn how to slow, pause or stop the tremors whenever you need to, helping you stay comfortable and in control throughout the process.

Is TRE® Right for Me?

TRE® can be a supportive practice for people experiencing ongoing stress, muscular tension or a sense of feeling overwhelmed or “stuck”. It can also be explored as part of a broader approach to wellbeing, relaxation and nervous system regulation.

TRE® may be particularly helpful if you:

  • Experience ongoing stress or find it difficult to fully relax
  • Hold persistent muscular tension
  • Feel disconnected from your body or bodily sensations
  • Would like a body-based approach to nervous system regulation
  • Want to develop a practice you can eventually use independently at home

Learning TRE® Safely

TRE® is designed to become a self-directed practice, but learning with a qualified practitioner helps you understand how to work with the tremors safely and comfortably.

You’ll learn how to regulate the intensity, recognise your own responses and pause or stop whenever you need to.

How TRE® May Support You

  • Reducing muscular tension and encouraging relaxation
  • Supporting nervous system regulation
  • Developing greater body awareness and connection
  • Helping you feel more grounded and settled
  • Supporting rest and sleep
  • Building confidence in responding to stress through the body
  • Developing a simple self-regulation practice you can use independently

What to Expect in a 1:1 TRE® Session

Your first session will introduce you to TRE® at a comfortable pace. We’ll begin with a brief check-in before moving through the simple preparatory exercises used to activate your natural tremor response.

I’ll guide you as you explore the tremors, helping you learn how to adjust their intensity and how to pause or stop whenever you choose.

We’ll finish with time to rest, settle and reflect on your experience.
