Learn TRE™ — and learn to teach it

Everything you need to understand Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises: how the method works, what a session involves, who it is for, and the three-module pathway to becoming a Global TRE™ Certified Provider in Singapore.

The method

What is TRE™?

TRE™ (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is an innovative series of seven exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. The exercises safely activate a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating — the neurogenic tremor — that releases muscular tension and calms the nervous system.

The method was created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, an international expert in trauma intervention who observed the same instinctive tremoring response in people across cultures and conflict zones. TRE™ is now taught in more than 100 countries through a global network of certified providers and certifying trainers, coordinated by the not-for-profit TRE For All, Inc.

When the tremor is activated in a safe, controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return to a state of balance. Many people report better sleep, less anxiety, reduced muscle pain, more energy and a greater sense of calm and resilience.

The seven exercises at a glance

  1. Feet & ankles — grounding and gentle fatigue of the lower legs
  2. Calves — rising onto the toes to warm the calf muscles
  3. Adductors & hips — opening the inner thighs
  4. Forward bends — lengthening the back line of the body
  5. Psoas stretch — releasing the deep hip flexors
  6. Wall sit — mild fatigue of the thighs to invite the tremor
  7. Lying down — allowing the tremor to move through the body with knees in a butterfly position

A full session takes 45–60 minutes. Once learned with a certified provider, most people practise at home for 15–20 minutes, two to three times a week.

How it works

Fight, flight — and the reset the body was designed for

Under threat, the body braces. If that charge is never discharged, it stays stored in the muscles and nervous system. TRE™ gives the body a safe way to complete the cycle.

1. Activation

Stress, deadlines or past events activate the sympathetic nervous system. Muscles — especially the deep psoas — contract to protect the core of the body.

2. Tremor

The seven exercises gently fatigue and stretch these muscles until the body's innate tremor mechanism switches on. The shaking is involuntary but always within your control.

3. Regulation

As the tremor releases stored tension, the parasympathetic system comes online — heart rate slows, breathing deepens and the body returns to rest and repair.

Reported benefits

  • Less worry and anxiety
  • Better, deeper sleep
  • Reduced muscle and back pain
  • More energy and endurance
  • Greater emotional resilience
  • Relief from chronic medical conditions
  • Improved flexibility and posture
  • Healing of old injuries held in the body
  • Increased presence and focus
  • A calmer response to conflict

Is TRE™ safe for me?

TRE™ is suitable for most adults and requires no prior experience. Because the tremor can bring up strong physical or emotional sensations, always learn it first with a certified provider, who will show you how to self-regulate and adapt the exercises.

Please speak to your doctor and tell your provider before a session if you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or injury, have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, a heart condition, or a psychiatric diagnosis such as complex PTSD, bipolar disorder or psychosis. TRE™ does not replace medical or psychological treatment.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need any experience to try TRE™?

No. TRE™ is designed for anyone. Your provider adapts the exercises to your body and shows you how to control the intensity from the very first session.

Do I have to talk about my trauma?

No. TRE™ works through the body. You never need to describe what happened, and many people prefer it for exactly that reason.

How many sessions do I need?

Most people learn a safe self-practice in three to four sessions with a certified provider, then continue at home. Group sessions and practice circles are a good way to keep going.

Can I do Module 1 online and continue in Singapore?

Yes. Module 1 is offered online as well as in person. Modules 2 and 3 are in person in Singapore, each followed by online supervision.

Are the ICF CCEUs recognised?

Module 1 carries 21 ICF Continuing Coach Education Units, recognised by the International Coaching Federation for credential renewal.

How long does certification take?

The Singapore cohort runs from August 2026 to February 2027. Supervision requirements between modules mean most participants complete within 6–9 months.

What happens after I certify?

You join the worldwide TRE™ provider network, can be listed in the Singapore directory on this site, and are welcome at our monthly practice circle and continuing-education workshops.
